The Manager, Sterile Processing manages the day-to-day operations of the Sterile Processing department including staffing (24 hours, 7 days/week), budget preparation, storing and distribution of sterile supplies and equipment for all nursing units. Oversees all functions related to the decontamination, cleaning and sterilization of supplies and equipment to ensure they meet or exceed current standards of practice.



  1. Manages the day-to-day operations of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) including monitoring staffing, surgical cases, and emergent cases schedules. Provide coverage for call-offs, breaks, and/or meal periods and make staffing adjustments based on surgical volumes and need to meet productivity range/targets.
  2. Provides department orientation to all new hires. Reviews all department specific policies and procedures and track department orientation completion and progress. Trains employees on any new sterilization equipment.  Maintains departmental educational/competency files for review by regulatory bodies. 
  3. Maintains detailed sterilization and biological records and complete tracking logs. Submits sterilization report for review by the Infection Control Committee and reports any findings from the sterilization records to the Director. Prepares and implements a plan of action, in collaboration with leader, to correct any out-of-standard numbers. 
  4. Oversees the decontamination and sterilization of instrumentation and equipment functions within the hospital. Updates equipment logs and report any issues to Bio-Med for repair or preventative maintenance scheduling.
  5. Maintains operating budget, short/long-term goals and plans for assigned area of responsibility in collaboration with leader, by preparing and/or directing the preparation of reports and analyses, and by reviewing and interpreting reports to determine if budget, goals, and performance measures are being attained/met. Implements cost containment measures or take correction action as necessary. Assesses and measures department’s productivity and outcomes, and provide staff with feedback on performance for collaboration of resolution.
  6. Develops and implements departmental policies, procedures and goals by identifying issues and recommending improvements, revisions, etc. Ensures compliance by educating staff regarding changes to policies, procedures, etc.
  7. Develops and implements an educational plan for department that assures the professional growth of staff.
  8. Ensures Sterile Processing meets and regulatory and accreditation standards, including but not limited to Joint Commission and Department of Public Health.

    Education and/or Experience                                                              
    Associate’s degree required. Minimum five years of experience in a high volume sterile processing or surgical environment which includes experience in cleaning/sterilization and assembling instrument sets.
    Computer Skills                                                          
    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
    Certified Central Service Technician preferred.
