Job Summary:

  • The Chief Operating Officer has responsibility for day-to-day operations of the facility and related services, ensuring that staff delivers high quality, safe and cost effective care for services with a positive margin. The Chief Operating Officer will promote the medical center’s position and image; reflective of the mission, standards and values of the AMITA Health and the communities it serves.
  • Helps to develop and oversees the ministry's planning, policies and practices in collaboration with the ministry’s executive leadership team.
  • The Chief Operating Officer supports the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in leading the operational, financial, and administrative activities of the Ambulatory, Ancillary Care, Support Services and Growth Strategy. This position includes responsibility for functional oversight of departments, e.g. non- Medical Group physician offices, ancillary services, and specialty care services such as: Family Practice Centers, Cardiology Centers, Radiation and Oncology Centers, and physician alignment in partnership with system services.

Responsibilities:

  • Implements effective and ongoing programs to measure, assess, and improve the quality of care/services provided to patients/customers. Implements operational improvements using appropriate data and benchmarking in conjunction with effective use of process improvement techniques
  • Ensures that activities and/or operations are appropriately integrated with the strategic plan while making sure the provision of quality care and services through the cost effective management of the ministry
  • Assists and advises the ministry’s President and CEO in establishing and executing strategic business plans to achieve operational objectives and in formulating and implementing best practices and policies
  • Participates in development of the organization's vision, policies and short- and long-term objectives.
  • Develops, implements and monitors operating budgets for areas of responsibility
  • Maintains knowledge of industry trends and recommends cost effective and efficient solutions
  • Directs and manages ministry’s ambulatory services working with the Clinic Managers, Department Administrators and Medical Directors. Additionally, collaborates with system and ministry service line personnel to optimize and resource day-to-day operational activities in an integrated manner across all business units at the ministry and aligned with the Region and in keeping with System and regional strategic direction
  • Develops, implements, and manages patient care delivery systems and processes in the outpatient setting that facilitate throughput of patients in a safe, efficient, high quality and cost effective manner
  • Assists in the development of strategy and business plans to support capital funding and ensures ancillary and ambulatory operations are efficient and effective for service responsiveness
  • Develops, implements, and maintains a customer service plan throughout ancillary and ambulatory operations with a monitoring component to provide feedback for medical and support staff
  • Evaluates patient satisfaction with services received from the ambulatory sites. Monitors service standards using metrics, (e.g., access, waiting times, call handling, patient satisfaction). Responds to patient complaints and resolves problems leading to the complaints
  • Interviews, hires, supervises and trains employees where applicable. Evaluates direct report’s performance and provides guidance on associated engagement throughout the ministry
  • Leads projects, chairs and/or participates in hospital committees and meetings as assigned by the CEO; coordinates major projects as member or chair locally and, as assigned, regionall
  • Serves as the executive leader in the region to review existing and potential new ventures from a business and strategic perspective, to include analysis, negotiations and implementations of plans for growing the base of business and overall outpatient market share for the ministry and aligned with regional objectives. Develops strategies for physician partnerships
  • Collaborates with the appropriate local, regional and system team members in supporting medical practice in the ambulatory clinic and outpatient service areas of the region. Supports community partners and elected officials to align centers with health care needs of the community
  • Aids the local and regional team members in the development of growth strategy for Ancillary and Ambulatory Services, and develops strategy for prudent fiscal administration and integrity of ambulatory and ancillary operations, to reduce outmigration and optimize resources
  • Interprets and ensures compliance with standards of accrediting and licensing bodies in areas of responsibility

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in hospital administration (or an equivalent combination of education and/or additional job-related experience) is preferred.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum ten years of experience in roles of senior-level healthcare management experience. Progressively responsible administrative experience in major healthcare institutions, preferably in an acute care setting.
