The Chief Nursing Officer provides vision and strategic direction for nursing operations and collaborates with facility nursing leadership to achieve this direction. Identifies implications of clinical decisions made at the level to enhance care management, quality, and other clinical services, under the direction of the President, and guidance from System Chief Nursing Officer (System CNO). Drives the standardization of nursing practices in the ministry with collaboration from the System CNO and ensures continuing clinical education for nursing staff.  The position also proactively works to improve and ensure the overall quality of the patient experience and associate experience by continuous process improvement objectives and measures. The position advocates for nursing practice and the patient experience, helps to develop systems that are patient and family-centered, and promotes the linkage of key services and functions across the hospital.


  1. Directs nursing administration and centralized staffing, including planning, budget and personnel management, policy development/implementation, and consultation with staff and senior management to ensure achievement of educational and recruitment goals for internal and external stakeholders.
  2. Manages and oversees nursing operations across the region, including design and implementation of nursing roles, work processes, and work flows to improve effectiveness and efficiency and support System and goals.
  3. Provides leadership and direction on strategies to promote retention and recognition of excellence in nursing, including oversight and recommendations regarding compensation and benefit programs for nursing staff.
  4. Oversees planning and provision of continuing education, role specific competencies, and staff development to nursing staff. Implements clinical education requirements for nursing staff. Maintains professional development activities to keep registered nursing practice up to date on industry trends.
  5. Develops and implements nursing engagement and retention plan to achieve nursing retention goals.
  6. Sets strategic goals and metrics for patient care, and provide input on investments in new and existing lines of business/services.
  7. Develops plans and guidelines to promote consistency of nursing care across geographic, functional, and facility boundaries, developing sustained relationships and collaboration with other leaders to deliver results around patient satisfaction, productivity, labor costs, patient safety, and clinical outcomes.
  8. Facilitates integration of clinical and evidence-based skills and procedures and standardization of nursing policies.
  9. Administers and coordinates preparation of annual budgets for patient care services.
  10. Implements credentialing/privileging policies for nurses based on System policies and procedures, and ensure compliance with such policies for nurses who practice or seek to practice in the regional.
  11. Promotes and fosters a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, and the coordination of care among disciplines. Provides input into the standardization of nursing procedures across the System with the System  CNO and System Vice President of Quality, and other region and faculty nursing leadership.
  12. Creates and achieves a desired future state or vision for the region through influence of organizational values, individual group goals, reinforcement and systems.

    Education and/or Experience                                                              

    Master’s degree in Nursing or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing with a Master’s degree in Business Administration required. Minimum ten or more years of progressive experience in nursing and patient care management, including five years of experience as a Hospital Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) with proven ability as a competent administrator. 

    Computer Skills                                                          

    Proficiency with Clinical Information Systems (i.e. Meditech or EPIC) and Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Word and Excel required.

    Registered Nurse with current Illinois License.
